DESCRIPTION
Sechin was an agricultural town
containing an important architectural complex used for political and religion purposes.
Its architecture and sculptures compose a well defined tradition.
They used clay and stones with special dexterity and art.
First there is a liking for clay;
its plasticity creates a building that according to Arturo Jiménez Borja
"proclaims a will of tranquil form, desirous of the good life,
land loving, without sharpness, and with the sweetness of a valley at harvest time."
They used stone to represent what was not possible with clay: the human drama of war. The expressive
force of the stonework represents a plastic conquest seldom attained in prehispanic art.
Sechin presents to us a town rich in cultural baggage, divided into incipient social classes. The priests and warriors are the leaders of the community, while the artisans, field workers and prisoners of war are dependents.
The development of Sechin was during the Early Formative Period (2,000 a 1,000 B.C.), consolidating in Casma a society with new socioeconomic and political foundations, achieving a culture of the same name throughout the coastal expanses of the Chavin region.
